Policies Week 1

Green Spaces - Green Spaces are something that Oakland needs more of. Green Spaces are parks. Oakland needs an increase in green spaces because they essential for people's health. Studies have shown that staying inside all day and getting no sunlight causes things like anxiety and insomnia. According to the article "How can Nature help with Depression?" by Diana Rodriquez, sunlight can cause feelings of depression to decrease. Feelings of depression decreases when we’re in the sun because exercising causes an increase in endorphin, which causes sensations to the body. Green Spaces in Oakland would add a lot of positive affects to our community, and help us a lot in the long run. We will make sure that Green Spaces are safe by giving people designated time slots for trees that they plant. Having designated time slots for taking care of trees is a positive impact because this could give people job opportunities. This could also let teens have community service hours. If teenagers danger the environment, there will be an increase in Community Service hours based on the severity of the crime that they've committed. Max will add a lot of green spaces to Oakland.

Illegal Dumping - Illegal dumping is a big problem in Oakland and we had  to spend almost $5.5 million per year before 2013, but since then we had to spend almost double that he clean the streets. Oakland decided to increase the fine of being caught dumping to $1000 but that still is not enough to help pay for the clean up. Illegal dumping happens mainly in poor neighborhood because not many people can pay for the trucks come and pick up their trash so they dump it. Oakland is giving out a reward for people who turn in people they saw dump their trash, but we think that this just make it harder on the poor population. We think a good idea would be to put up security cameras in local spots where illegal dumping happens a lot. This would cast a lot of money to put up security cameras but this could really help and the fines would help pay for the cameras.

Renewable Energy - Renewable Energy is something that Oakland needs an increase in. Currently in Oakland, there are only 5 programs that people can join about renewable energy. From 2015-2017, Oakland has made a $2.4 billion. We could use some of that money towards solar panels and other types of renewable energy. With this 2.4 billion, we would be able to make at least 3 solar panel farms, and still have money left over. Our group came up with the idea of making bicycle libraries. Bicycle libraries is where we could rent bicycles using credit cards, and rent out a bike for 5 days. Bicycle libraries will use 1.2 billion dollars out of Oakland's 2.4 billion dollars. In our bicycle libraries, there will be set locations and events for learning how to repair a bike you borrowed if it got damaged. Our bicycle libraries will also give the homeless job opportunities which is positive for the increasing homeless population in Oakland. Max will make a big change about renewable energy for Oakland.

Food Deserts - Food Deserts are places where it is very difficult to get fresh produce or food. There can be little to no supermarkets, or grocery stores, and there would be more places like convenience stores or liquor stores. This would be a problem for people for more than many reasons, such as people in poor communities that can not pay for transportation. There are a few solutions to this that we can do in Oakland, one of which would be community gardens. These would be gardens where people can plant their own food, and share with others from their own produce that they grow. Another solution to the problem of Food Deserts is that there are a lot of empty lots in Oakland, and we can put that to good use. We can do this by using the empty lots to hold farmers markets that sell fresh produce to people, and to do this at affordable prices. Another reason families can benefit from this, is that since there are quite a few empty lots, there wouldn’t be just one or two places for people to get fresh produce, and that increases the chances of more people getting better and fresh foods. In Seattle, they are converting old and abandoned buses into mobile grocery stores. In Oakland, we could do this to, and the buses could travel to lower income areas to sell food to them, since they may not have certain forms of transportation, such as cars.
