POLICIES WEEK 2
TECH COMPANIES AND THEIR IMPACT ON HOUSES:

PROBLEM: We believe that Oakland is going through a tech boom, causing the price of homes to increase. We want to add more tech companies to Oakland, but we don't want families to feel like they're being invaded. We don't want our community to raise the price of houses for people who can barely afford their houses. New studies show that gentrification can be unhealthy. Though gentrification can help many with housing. This can also displace people from their homes and break down the community. There are many effect of tech boom on Oakland's community. We will fix this problem by adjusting peoples rent to the salary that they get weekly or monthly.

POLICY: We are going to address the issue of Tech Companies and Impact on Houses. To do so, we will adjust people’s rents to their salaries and convert dangerous warehouse living spaces into more affordable housing/artist friendly spaces.

COST OF LIVING IN OAKLAND:
PROBLEM: The rise in technology is what is causing the cost of living to increase in Oakland. This is a problem because the cost of living increasing has resorted to people living in risky places that are unsafe. This can lead to things like arson and crimes. In response to the incredibly large tech boom taking place in most of the Bay Area at the moment, the cost of living has risen all over Oakland. Even in lower income areas, home prices and other costs of living are rising to the point where minimum wage cannot even cover it.
POLICY: There are many problems that less fortunate people have to go through to live in apartments. We plan to create programs focused on providing rental assistance, and use the talk with rental assist, and to use the “rental credits.”

HOMELESSNESS:

PROBLEM: Homelessness is an ongoing issue in Oakland, with increasing amounts of tent camps, where homeless people usually live. The amount of these tent camps has risen to crisis level, and this needs to fixed.

POLICY: Oakland has a big problem of homelessness that needs to be addressed and fixed. To do this we can give job training, education, homeless shelters and donate money to the homeless shelters.

SHOULD OAKLAND INVITE TECHNOLOGY COMPANIES?:
PROBLEM: What are the benefits of having tech companies in Oakland? If we build buildings for tech companies we can sell it to them and get 5% of their profit, with that money we can fix green spaces, food deserts, illegal dumping, and renewable energy. It can also raise the price of homes because in San Francisco the prices of homes raised when apple employees moved in according to “theatlantic.com”. We should have more technology companies in Oakland because the technology will start to evolve and expand.

POLICY: We will let tech companies come to Oakland, but they will not be allowed to buy out a used apartment building. Tech companies must set 10% of their profits aside to help build affordable housing.

WHAT RESPONSIBILITIES SHOULD TECH COMPANIES HAVE IN OAKLAND?:
PROBLEM: With the increasingly amount of tech companies in Oakland, what responsibilities should they have?

POLICY: To be allowed to be located in Oakland, tech companies must follow these responsibilities. Tech companies must provide internships for public high school students all over Oakland, tech companies must reach out low income neighborhoods and provide training programs for them, tech companies must have at least 50-75% diverse employees, and tech companies must provide free healthcare to struggling employees with large families.
