POLICIES WEEK 3 SUMMARY
IMMIGRATION & SANCTUARY CITIES

PROBLEM: Some people want to take away the funding for sanctuary cities leaving authority figures split on their idea of sanctuary cities. Illegal immigrants and all of their family members have been affected by this and we need to find a solution.

POLICY: However all of these ways to become a legal immigrant are very long, complicated, and limited ways. America can only allow a certain amount of immigrants in every year, Marco Rubio said in a politicalfact.com interview that roughly 1 million immigrants are allowed to enter every year. However there are 11 million illegal immigrants right now and 700,000 illegal immigrants have been coming every year. But we have a solution. We are going to allow immigrants to come to Oakland but we will require and enforce that they get green cards. Green cards holders are allowed to participate in all government activities, they are documented in the U.S, they pay their taxes, they can legally work, and they can leave the country and come back without the card of being deported from ICE (read the full list here) Green cards and immigrants were strengthened Oakland's economy and and security.

POLICE REFORM/BRUTALITY

PROBLEM: Police brutality and racism is an ongoing issue that is popping up more especially with our current president. Over 100 people protest in Chicago against police brutality. They gathered on 51st street to honor two recent police shootings. “Fueled by anger over two recent fatal police shootings in Minnesota and Louisiana, Chicago-based activists organized a protest at the site of one of the city's controversial police use-of-force incidents. More than 100 demonstrators gathered at 51st Street and King Drive on Friday night to honor Alton Sterling, who was shot and killed in a struggle with police outside a convenience store in Baton Rouge, La., and Philando Castile, whose girlfriend broadcast the gruesome aftermath of his traffic-stop death in Falcon Heights, Minn., last week.”2,000 people started to protest in broadway. Many buildings ended up with spray paint and broken windows after wards.

POLICY: Police officers should wear body cameras to record what they are doing when on duty. If they do this their actions are recorded and can be punished. “Body cameras are far from the solution. But they can be important and helpful, especially when the local community supports their use, guided by clear regulations. There should be clear rules for when these cameras must be activated, the report says. If there's a case where they should have been used but have not been, there should be a presumption of police misconduct. Body cameras should be earmarked by states or localities, not as part of local police budgets.” Police should have people that illegally use drugs such as marijuana do push ups instead of sending them to jail. “A police officer from Arlington, Texas, is winning praise on social media Thursday after he was filmed making a teenager who smoked marijuana do push-ups instead of jail time.”

SEX TRAFFICKING

PROBLEM: Sex Trafficking is a very real issue that has been glorified in media, and people have abused their power to take advantage of people in the sex trafficking industry. Movies such as Pretty woman are glorifying sex trafficking. They are sending the message that if you find the right person to have sex with then you can have an happy ending. The movie doesn't at all show the true effects of sex trafficking, it shows a Disney-esque story about sex trafficking, which is so different from reality. Reality TV shows such as “Toddlers in Tiaras” are sexalizing children. Social media is having a huge effect on the sex trafficking. For example cat fishing you may be thinking that you're talking to a boy, and the next thing you know you’re in the sex trafficking

POLICY: Schools can teach kids about sex trafficking for what it really is, and not glorify it. Schools can also have posters with the sex trafficking hotline because it could help kids learn that they can get help. When people think of sex trafficking, they usually only think about women prostitutes. The healthwatch.com article "Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children", claims "95% of the sexual encounters a trafficked boy endures are with other males." This shows that the sex trafficking industry also includes boys and not only girls. The article also claims "Every year, at least 100,000 children and prostituted in the US." This quote shows that there are so many kids that are targeted and kids have to taught about sex trafficking because it also affects them.

SCHOOL/EDUCATION REFORM

PROBLEM: We believe that public education is a civil right for everyone. We believe that public education can be improved so there are more windows in life for the people who don’t have the money for private schools.

POLICY: We will work with Oakland Unified School District and Educate 78 to improve the quality of public schools so there are more opportunities for everyone. We plan on working with Education Funding Partners and local stores in order to supply students with education and the resources they need. Also, we plan on hiring tutors or mentors that are willing to help students with less educations.
